Installer gives me error message right after it starts “Validation of packages or something”. I didn't investigate further why this happened, maybe Eset support staff can review, it looks like the installer wasn't able to use the Temporary directory? Run ONYX utility and all the maintenance tools and reboot.

We, the users, must become risk-aware adults.įor one thing, there have been no more security updates for OS X below 10.9.5. (I've always worked in a multi-platform environment.) That's not a deal breaker on Macs by any means, but the intrinsic sense of built-in security that Apple tended to inspire is unfounded, and less plausible as time passes.

Paradoxically, nowadays I find better security tools in Windows 10 than in OS X 10.11. For too long, their attitude seemed to be, "Don't you worry your pretty little head, you're being taken care off." Falsely reassuring. Worse, they failed to educate Mac users adequately. While a longtime Mac adept, and a fan of OS X, I'm sorry to say that Apple has been a little cavalier in fending off the kind of security threats that have been forever associated with Windows. One of the most effective (now paid, but well worth the fee) is ClamXav. On the conventional virus chasing front, once the damage has been done, there are number of free and paid tools. Unfortunately, there is no shortcut to reading up quite a bit about OS X security breaches before becoming proficient with a tool like Little Snitch. To monitor incoming and outgoing connections, and if necessary to block them, I found no tool better than Little Snitch:

The Safe Mac » Apple cracks down on adware You can see which version you have by opening the "Protection" tab in Onyx (an indispensable system tool, still free as of this writing), or by following these instructions: Since 10.6, Apple has built in the rather rudimentary XProtect, to which Gatekeeper was added in 10.8. How does OS X defend you from infections and intrusions? (Obviously, no big worries if your workstation still runs 10.6.8 or 10.8.5, and you don't keep it connected to the internet.) The system security problem is more serious, assuming your Mac is exposed to the internet. The Safari security problem can be circumvened by using alternative browsers, like Firefox or Chrome, which are kept current and can run on some older OS X versions. How do you monitor that and what are the risks? For one thing, there have been no more security updates for OS X below 10.9.5. for the pinnacle spot as the most useless OS X version. In my experience, 10.7 is vying with 10.10. Kudos to those who manage to sustain a productive workflow on 10.7.x. Apple must be faulted for not providing security updates for OS versions older than the two, occasionally three, most recent ones. Running anything earlier than 10.9.5 on a Mac connected to the internet is a security risk and must be carefully monitored. (Which Mac? With the obsolescence of the Pro and the recent gelding of the Mini, that's a far more delicate question.) Certainly not any more a reason to postpone upgrading to El Capitan, if needed.

Not having all drivers and plug-ins ready at the roll-out of a major OS overhaul is a common occurrence, nothing to shout about. until 10.11.3, which is now mature and stable. Depending on which Mac generation works best with which latest OS X, I have currently 10.8.6, 10.9.5, 10.11.3 on my machines.
